More than Conquerors!

August 30th, 2012

Conqueror: which comes from the word conquer: to win, to get the better of, overcome, subdue, overthrow, defeat.

Romans: 8:37:Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
Love, Faith and Conquest.

In life we can sometimes face the hardest battles and challenges that leave us feeling defeated.
This story is about three ordinary yet remarkable women who faced the trial that life sent them and became more than conquerors!

Jacqueline Mercer’s Story.

It was mid January of 2011 when we got the news of Jackie having been ill.  She had backaches persistently for some months and thought perhaps it was a back strain from lifting our great nephew whom she was babysitting (he was a very cute yet rather portly baby).  This information she kept to herself and took aspirin occasionally to relieve the pain.

Getting out of her son’s car one day she hit her head on the interior frame of the door.  This made her back jam and caused her a considerable amount of pain.  Again she took aspirin to alleviate the discomfort and continued on with her day to day living.

As the weeks passed, the pain in her back became quite unbearable. By mid January, on a Saturday when aspirin was not enough to stop the pain she went to the emergency room.  My niece called to let us know that my sister was not feeling well and that they were going to the hospital.

This sent a shock to me, because Jackie is never ill and to go to the emergency room, she must have really felt bad.  Sending a sense of urgency to my older sister, mommy and I, we drove over to meet them.

There was a substantial amount of snow and ice on the ground, let alone the cold, which would have been enough to keep everyone in the house.  We knew this issue must have been a bad one for Jackie to have gone out in these conditions.  When we arrived at the hospital’s emergency room, we met my niece and my nephew in the waiting room area.  My sister was already in the back and being examined.

As we waited to hear from the doctors so many thoughts raced through my head and I had to rebuke one in particular.  Sometimes our spirit alerts us to things that we don’t want to face and at that moment it’s praying time! The wait time for us to see her seemed like an eternity.  Finally we were able to go back and be with Jackie for a little while.  We took turns going and then returning to the waiting room area for the impending news.

Jackie is always upbeat and to say the least very, very comedic.  She would have us laughing into tears and I often told her she should have been a comedian.  She loves people and making them happy seemed to come so naturally for her.  I would tell her that I would gladly be her manager if she wanted to go on stage  =). She would laugh at the statement as if I was making jokes and I was serious!

The hour of dismay came…my sister Yvonne went back to see what was happening and she was there with Jackie when the news was given to her.  My niece and nephew wanted to go back but were told not at this time and I was requested to come back there with them.  Once again that same old energy arose and spoke to me saying what was wrong.  I again rebuked it!  When I went into the room they were holding each other and the horror on their faces coupled with tears made me want to retreat.

Yvonne cried out, “Jackie has cancer!” as the tears streamed down her face.  I ran over to join them in the embrace and my first instinct was to cry with them.  Something greater than I would not let me cry instead the words that were given to me was to tell her to Trust GOD!  I remember telling her to have faith as Jesus spoke of in Matthews 17:20…If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing is impossible unto you.  This means that when you have the faith to ask GOD for help, even if it’s a tiny drop (faith) but you hold on to that faith and trust HIM, it will be done.  You can’t waver in it, you must stand firm on it.  I can’t remember the exact words but the spirit inside gave me the courage and the faith to tell her she would be healed, she would live and not die.

As we began to pray I laid hands on her back and I saw (even though my eyes were closed) some spotty images diminished as we asked GOD for her healing…just us three sisters. The scripture says in Matthew 18:19 & 20..if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my FATHER…where two or three are gathered in my name  there am I in the midst of them. Touching in prayer binds up good when you make your requests know unto the LORD. HE hears and HE answers!

There was a young nurse that came into the room and she brought the word of faith to Jackie also. This was the beginning of so many more of GOD’s people to come and pour out a good word from above on Jackie.

It was a very trying time to say the least.  She was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, which spread to her liver and her spine.  The doctors that were around her and allegedly treating her at the time stated for us to call hospice and let them make it easy on her.  But GOD was working things out for her good and for HIS Glory!  Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not evil, to give you an expected end. GOD can take a fiery test and turn it into a triumphant testimony…

My cousin Jane was instrumental in helping us reach out to the CTCA in Philadelphia, PA. They work with Traditional and Naturopathic methods for treating the disease. They help encourage your hope by working on the total person, not just the sickly part. She had been going there for a while and they marveled at her continued recoveries.

The diagnosis was more than a year ago and Jackie continues to heal and keep the Faith as GOD shows HIMSELF mighty in her life. I won’t say it’s an easy battle, but I will say that it’s one that continues victoriously!  Having a strong support system to back up your faith and making lifestyle changes (i.e. diet, exercise, and mindset) is important.  Even making these changes can be a task within itself, but they are ones that must be done.

We believe for a complete recovery and will continue to encourage our beloved Jackie and send up Praise and Thanksgiving for her Victory!

Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1.

Jean Pollard’s Story

I first met Jean some thirty years ago, while stationed in Alaska doing a tour with the US Army.  A trailblazer and a true saint of GOD, she was instrumental in helping me keep the faith so far away from home. Jean was like a big sister to me and every young person that came into her inner circle.  She abounded in faith, the one that is spoken of throughout the Bible.

I had not spoken with Jean in about twenty years; we lost contact with each other.  The surprising thing was that, Jean was looking for me to share her testimony. She actually got in touch with me through my daughter, whom she had never met.  Searching for me she came across my daughter’s name, she lives in Georgia. Jean called her. My daughter knew of Jean from my talks about her and life in Alaska and connected us together via the phone. This was the mighty hand of GOD showing how Great HE is and that there’s nothing too hard for GOD.  HE knows what we need and HE will respond and send us people to encourage us and renew our belief in HIS Divinity!

She had been diagnosed with an incurable cancer of the pelvic area some months prior.  The tumor was seven inches long.  Jean denied what they had told her and emphatically said that she did not have a tumor let alone having cancer.  The doctors presented her with the proof, being able to not only see the growth in an x-ray, but to feel it on her person.  She decided to have surgery, but she told them under no circumstances would she have chemo or radiation administered to her.  The doctors thought that she was in denial because they did not believe that she would be able to survive without it, let alone be cured from the cancer which they believed there was no cure.

Jean has indomitable faith in GOD and GOD alone.  She knew that her healing comes from above.  She stood on the word taken from Jesus as he spoke in Matthew: 9:22 …Daughter, be of comfort, thy faith hath made thee whole…  She knew that her life was a written epistle as found in (read) II Corinthians 3:2-5.  For her, the ultimate was to share what GOD could and would do for her.  Jean’s boldness to speak her healing through the Almighty GOD to men (doctors), who feel in some rights that they are equivalent to HIS greatness because they practice medicine, was not well received.

She told me that the day of her surgery as she was being prepped to go into the O.R. (operating room) she continued to speak boldly about what GOD would do.  This offended some of the doctors and they thought that she may be a little extreme in her belief, while still insisting that she should undergo chemo and possibly radiation after surgery.  Jean continued even while being sedated to tell the doctors of what she would do concerning what they told her after surgery and it wasn’t to comply with their wishes. “GOD is going to heal me. You’ll see! “, was her reply to their medical rhetoric.  Standing on the word, she knew just what was meant in the verse, Matthew 19:26…With men this is impossible; but with GOD all things are possible.

She came through surgery without any problems and began her healing.  Jean did not receive the chemotherapy or the radiation.  She went back in three months for her follow up i.e. blood cell counts and x-rays.  Everything was looking good to her belief and the doctors’ consternation.  The physicians, to say the least, were baffled and Jean yet refused to have any other type of medical therapy, continuing to testify of the Goodness of GOD and her miracle healing. Knowing the word of GOD is true, I know that Jean understood what Jesus said in Matthew 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Another three months came and she went in to do yet another follow up, no doubt the doctors did want to see if she was still fairing well.  She was doing wonderfully and above all that they expected!  They told her that she should come back again and in this follow up they want to go back into the area that they operated on.

I Corinthians 2: 25- 29  Because the foolishness of GOD is wiser than men; and the weakness of GOD is stronger than men…But GOD hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and GOD hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;…That no flesh should glory in HIS presence.

When the doctors went in for the third time (three is truly a charm) and opened up the sight, there was no scar tissue, no indentation of where the tumor was removed, nothing showed that resembled marks of having been operated on.  This was truly astonishing to the doctors that they gave the Almighty GOD Praise and stated, “In the combined years of surgery for all the doctors that participated in Jean’s case, none had seen a miracle like this before and some even gave GOD the Praise.”

I was overcome with joy, praise and adoration of GOD’s Greatness and asked Jean what she did during this time.  She told me of her Faith and that she informed very few people of what was going on with her and only ones that she believed would join her in prayer and not pity her.  Knowing that GOD had her back, she stood on the promises of GOD and nothing more. Jean stated that she meditated on the healing verses from the BIBLE which she read in a compact booklet and she listened to Creflo Dollars’ Daily Faith Confessions.

I’m no Creflo Dollar fan (once you start speaking about a particular pastor or church, people sometimes think that you’re endorsing them and this is not the case), neither do I have any aught against him either, but when you’re looking to be fed you’re not choosy about the meal you’re given until you’re able to feed yourself.  Meaning that what the doctors had been advising for my sister was not what we wanted to accept, nor did we believe their verdict. If there was anything we could do to turn all this around, we would.

Jean mailed off the CD and the booklet to me, in fact she express mailed it.  We waited for weeks and nothing arrived.  She called to ask if we received the package that she sent for my sister and I told her nothing came.  Disappointed… to say at the least, she thought that maybe we overlooked it or something to that effect, but on the contrary, we were waiting perilously for the arrival of the package. (Two months in waiting)

Jean contacted the post office who had not returned it to her and then was told, they had it there.  The postal clerk stated that it was delivered to my address.  They stated that no one was home so it was returned to the post office and never picked up. I knew this was not the truth, because my mom is always at the house and she didn’t receive the package nor was a yellow slip left for retrieval. When GOD wants to bless, the negative will always try to mess things up.

She mailed the package a second time and we received it promptly.  Jean’s faith in action became ours.  She continues to be cancer free and Praise full.  To GOD be the Glory for the Great things that HE alone can do!

Standing on the promises of GOD without waver can indeed make you whole (healed), but it takes unwavering Faith.  In the face of seemingly insurmountable odds you can be victorious.  This was the message that Jean was bringing to me so that I could tell my sister.  Through the time lapse of receiving the CD and meditation booklet, we continued to have the Prayer of Faith.  James 5:15  And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the LORD shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven.

Jean reached out to us in a time that we needed to know that there was healing in the land.  Although we say we understand and believe, our Faith can be shaken in an adverse time.  GOD sends redemption to his children…if you only Believe!

Jane Miller’s Story

Jane Miller is my first cousin on my mom’s side.  I saw Jane in July of 2010 at our family reunion and had no clue that she was a cancer survivor or that she was going through treatment for Multiple Myeloma.

She was her vibrant upbeat self, working hard to ensure that everyone was being feed and attending things in the kitchen.  For her it was business as usual, no complaints, no frowns, no mentioning of any ailments at all and no pity party for sure.

She showed no signs of being ill in the physical or the mental.  Her hair was as long as usual, she had no significant weight loss and her skin still looked good. No tell tale evidence of anything going on or going wrong.  GOD is Good!

It was after I had returned to Jersey that I found out about Jane and her personal battle.  She has GOD as her lead and she knows that victory was to be had as long as HE deemed it!

I spoke with Jane because I was planning to do the 2nd Family reunion in New Jersey and it was not coming together in terms of a venue for the event.  Once I found out about my sister’s plight, my zeal for the reunion was gone (I dropped the ball).  Talking with Jane she told me to get in contact with the CTCA (Cancer Treatment Centers of America) based in Philadelphia, PA.  In fact she had given me the number to contact one of the Oncologist Information Specialist and this was in February of 2011.  Time was truly of the urgent type and we had none to waste.

I had seen the commercials before on television and had wanted to contact them.  This was confirmation of the way to go and I Thank GOD for HIS leading!

Despite of what Jane was going through she had true and loving concern for my sister Jackie and wanted to help ensure that she receive the best of care in New Jersey.  Jane lives in Georgia.

Family is all we have, again, whether it is through birth, adoption or friends that are like kin, we’re triumphant when we all work together.  Her selflessness in caring about people, even in light of all that she was going through touched my heart immensely.  Philippians 2:2-5  Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like-minded , having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.  Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.  Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.

Jane stood and is still standing on the Word of GOD!  She has had trials, but has come out Triumphant Thanks to the Mercies of the ALMIGHTY GOD! Isaiah 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper…This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.  One day at a time is how she takes it and knowing that she has come this far by Faith, she continues to lean on the LORD.

This is a lesson that we all should learn, be selfless and compassionate even in our time of need. When we take time to think of others, we receive the same Blessings that we send their way!  My cousin held onto the Word of GOD and stood firm on HIS promises. Jane’s cancer is gone and GOD be Praised for HIS Goodness!

After thought:

When faced with insurmountable odds, I believe that Faith is the key to unlock the Door of Hope. We can’t focus on the situation we must center on the solution even if it seems out of reach. For me Faith in GOD is the major part of that resolution. Trusting and Believing against all we see and hear is definitely a trial in itself, but these stories provide some encouragement that it is possible. Luke 19:27 And He said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with GOD!

The one undisputable fact that binds these stories together is the three women and their Faith in GOD!
Habakkuk  2:4  For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

Be Blessed!
